Congratulations to Shanica Yankey of Wesmar. who has qualified for the Carifta Games in the Javelin U-17 girls category.

CACAC Ranking Indoor March 1, 2009

The CACAC Executive Office has announced the launching of a new web page www.cacac.tk

Below you will find the CACAC indoor ranking dated 1st March 2009. Mr. Victor Lopez, CACAC President, has appointed a Statistics Webmaster for the CACAC Region from January 2009.

Congratulations goes to Tyron Benjamin, who is consistently improving and for now ranking second in the Shot Put. So far he is one of 4 athletes qualified for both the CAC Champs in Cuba and the Caribbean Games in Trinidad in July 2009 - with a good chance for a medal.

New Shot Put Seniors National Record

Congratulations! With a push of 18.01 meters, overseas based Tyron Benjamin has set a new Dominica National Record in the Shot Put senior category.

With this performance he won the Shot Put Event at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, which was held in Landover MD on the 14th February 2009. With 18.01 meters he also broke the Championship Record and presently ranks as # 20 collegiate thrower in the US, which provisionally qualifies him for the Indoors NCAA Championship - well done Tyron, a great achievement!

We have received interesting statistics of the New Shot Put National Record from Mr. Ray O'Neal, the Area Track & Field Statistician:

"Very good performance. First O.E.C.S athlete to reach 18 metres in the shot put. Only Jamaica, the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago from the Commonwealth Caribbean have had throwers over that distance. Congratulations."

IAAF World Youth Championship & World Championship Standards

Entry Standards for the IAAF World Youth Championship & World Championship are now up.

The World Youth Championship will be held from July 8 - 12 2009 in Bressanone, Italy.

The World Championship will be held from August 15 - 23 2009 in Berlin, Germany.

New Shot Put Seniors National Record

Tyron Benjamin placed second at the Great Dane Classic in New York as he broke his own Shot Put Seniors National Record by 16 cm to 17.61 meters.

Congratulations Tyron! With this performance he has already passed the Caribbean Games qualification mark, which stands at 17.00 m.

Mini Meet #1 Results & Report

Results and the report of the first Mini Meet of the 2009 athletic season are now up.

Congratulations go to:

Andre Bazil of OAC, who threw a new U-20 and Seniors Javelin record (62.72m) and has qualified for the Carifta Games 2009.
Lincoln Riviere of Wesmar, who has also qualified for Carifta in the U-20 Javelin.
Dillon Simon of OAC, last year's Carifta Gold medallist in the U-17 Shot Put, who has qualified again, but this year in the U-20 Shot Put category.

The athletes are encouraged to continue training in preparation for the next Mini Meet, scheduled to take place in Grand Bay on Sunday 15th February.

Mini Meet #1 Schedule Of Events

The DAAA has scheduled the first activity in 2009 for this coming Sunday 25th January in Marigot. As done in previous years we will commence the season on the track with the preparational meets with a first Mini Meet at Lio Park in Marigot.

We wish to start at 12 noon - please be on time. Registrations will be done on spot.

We hope that this first opportunity to compete will motivate athletes and coaches to test and analyze their performance stand early in 2009 - the U-15's aiming at the CAC Age Group Champs, the juniors at at Carifta Games and the seniors at the Caribbean Games in July.

Carifta And Caribbean Games 2009 Entry Standards

Entry Standards for the Carifta and Caribbean Games 2009 are now up.

The Carifta Games will be held in St.Lucia from the 11th - 13th April. The qualification deadline will be the 22nd March 2009.

The Caribbean Games will be held in Trinidad from the 13th - 19th July. Performances must be achieved during the period 1st January 2008 to 30th June 2009.

DAAA 2009 Executive

The Dominica Amateur Athletic Association held it's Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 23rd December, 2008. It was not an election year, but due to the resignation of 3 executive members an election to fill the vacant positions was held.

The DAAA Executive for 2009 looks as follows (new elected members in blue) :

Report on Commonwealth Youth Games 2008

The 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games took place in Pune India from the 12th - 18th October 2008. There were five athletes selected to represent Dominica under the sport of athletics. They were: André Bazil and Davis Hypolite (Javelin), Dillon Simon (Shot put & Discus), Kelma Sabaroche (High Jump) and Shanica Hypolite (100m & 200m). Officials who accompany the team were: Ms. Shirley Francis (Chaperon) and Mr. Nabi Wallace (Coach).

Results: Secondary Schools Independence Athletics Finals

The Secondary Schools Independence Athletics Finals were held at the Windsor Park Stadium on 15 & 17 October 2008.

Three Championship Records were broken, congratulations:

1200m U-14 girls:	JOSEPH Ayodel	C.B.S.S.	4:35.0
Discus U-20 boys:	DUBLIN Calvin	D.S.C.	40.95m
Javelin U-14 girls:	LINTON Chelsey	N.E.C.S.	30.60m
Javelin U-20 boys:	RIVIERE Lincoln	D.S.C.	58.32m

Please note: Unfortunately the two U-14 High Jump events had to be cancelled due to wet conditions

This first experience in the new Windsor Park Stadium was a successful one. If only we could include the horizontal jumps and shot put events inside the arena. And if next year we are able to increase the number of supporting and cheering schools or spectators in the Stadium, the motivation for the athletes to win this championship will grow - then hopefully more athletes will prepare seriously and through tougher competitions performance will improve. To win future Windward Island School Games we need to raise the standard on the track and in the jumps with all this talent in our schools. Preparations for 2009 should start now, nine months before the Games.

Thanks to all officials, helpers and participating Schools for your effort and cooperation to make these Independece Athletics Finals 2008 in Roseau a success.
